What you want to say matters more than the greeting.

Don't open with a greeting and then wait. Send what you came to say in the same message. Faster conversations start with that small habit.

NO HELLO

After “hello,” then what?

Before you wait for a reply, send the reason you wrote.

The long way
Messages
  1. Them

    Hello

  2. 5 minutes later
  3. Me

    Yes?

  4. Them

Mind if I ask you something?

  5. Me

    Sure, go ahead.

  6. Them

I wanted to ask about tomorrow's schedule.

The actual question arrives only after several round trips.

The direct way
Messages
  1. Them

Hi! Before tomorrow's meeting, could you tell me where the notes are?

  2. Me

Hi! The notes are in the folder shared last week.

When the point arrives with the greeting, the other person can start on an answer the moment they read it.

Why send the point with the greeting?

A messenger is not a phone call.

On a call, saying hello and waiting for a voice on the other end is natural. In chat, people open messages at different times.

A note that only says hello doesn't tell them what you need.

Send the greeting and the question together, and they can understand it — and answer — as soon as they see it.

This is not a request to drop manners.

A kind greeting is always welcome.

Just don't stop there and wait. Put the point in the same message, right after hello.

A few ways to write it

  • Hi! When you have a moment, could you tell me where the last project landed?
  • Hello. I'm writing because there's a charge I'd like to check.
  • Hi! Two times in yesterday's schedule overlap. Could you check which one to keep?

Good communication starts with respecting each other's time.
